Philosophy of Teaching
Teaching involves guiding students toward knowledge and understanding. My job is to both present information and provide opportunities for students to think critically. Both at the high school and the university level, every student will leave my class with increased knowledge and improved reading, writing and speaking skills. They also will possess a stronger ability to process information, think critically, and make sense of their world.
Learning occurs best when we are at ease. My classroom is a place of laughter, kindness and respect where students are encouraged to take risks and to experiment with new ideas. As an Odyssey of the Mind coach for seven years, I have learned the value of creative thinking and learning from mistakes. When students are comfortable in experimenting with new concepts, they are suddenly able to broaden their thinking— this is learning.
If only students were like machines; then there would be a prescribed doctrine to follow for teaching. But, each person is different with a unique learning style and unique interests. Therefore, teaching involves finding what motivates each individual and understanding how each student learns best. I strive to address all learning styles. In my classroom, information is always presented in various formats, and students work both independently and in groups. Students display their skills and knowledge through tests, papers and presentations. In addition, technology is paramount in providing new ways for students to find information and consider what they learn in a greater context.
Teaching is hard work. Reading, writing, and speaking are skills that are improved through practice. A good teacher offers reinforcement continuously through both formative and summative assessments. A good teacher requires frequent writing and evaluates this writing in order to provide students with the feedback necessary to increase their skills. A good teacher takes the time to communicate with her students and to understand their skills and challenges. All of this takes time and commitment, but it is worth the effort. I work hard to be the best teacher that I can be.
